Amazon River Dolphins live 1000 miles from the ocean in the Amazon river basins
of South America.
They are normally cream-colored or pink. Some dolphins, probably young ones, are
black above and
creamy pink below. They have a long, slightly down-curved snout and a small
dorsal fin. The flippers
and flukes are both large. Their eyes are small, but still functional, and set
above large bulging cheeks.
Because of the bulging cheeks, these dolphins will often swim upside down while
close to the bottom.
The population is stable at the moment, but vulnerable to pollution and habitat
destruction.
