Dolphin Facts   

The Striped Dolphin is very similar to the Common Dolphin
but slightly more slender. The top half is uniformly dark and
is divided from the lighter bottom half by a prominent dark
line running from eye to vent. It is 6 to 8 feet long, weighs
150lbs, can swim through the water at more than 30mph
and has a life span of around 25 years. Very common in the
Bay of Gibraltar where they feed on sardines and shrimp.

Diet: fish, squid, octopi, krill and other crustaceans

Birth: 1 m. (39 inches), birth weight unknown

How they look: dark flippers located within white body area; pointed tips; small, slender flppers; pale gray sides; white or pink underside; thin, dark stripe running from underside of tail stock to eye; narrow, pale gray stock; bluish gray or brownish upper side; dark, strongly falcate dorsal fin, pale gray finger-shaped marking below dorsal fin; thin dark streak behind eye, black patch around each eye; slender head; smoothly sloped forehead; distinct crease separating forehead and beak; dark, prominent beak; and 1 or 2 dark bands between eye and flipper

Size: 200-330 lbs. (90-150 kgs.) 1.8-2.5 m. (6-8 1/4 ft.)

Where they live: warm temperature, subtropical, and tropical waters around the world, offshore (sometimes inshore)

How many dolphins are in a pod: 1-3000 in a group

Threats: hunting/whaling and entanglement in net
